Madison B Defeats Branford Seniors to Remain Unbeaten

It was a beautiful fall morning as May's Seniors took to the gridiron at Daniel Hand High School to face the 8-0 top seeded Madison A Tigers. The Hornets won the toss, and received the kickoff. But a stalled drive and a punt put the ball into the potent hands of the enemy, who scored a touchdown in just 5 plays on a nice run by Ian O'Toole (#20), but the conversion kick was no good, so the score was 6-0.

Another failed Branford drive, punt and a Tiger touchdown by O'Toole combined with a two point conversion kick to put the Hornets in an early 14-0 hole.

After a Branford fumble gave the Tigers the ball back in the second quarter, Ian O'Toole was trying to take a handoff through the middle, but was stopped by Shuan Reilly, and then stood up and stripped of the ball by Chris Rice. Jimmy may recovered the fumble, and the Hornets were set up on the Tiger 44. A couple of running plays went for no gain before DJ ran to the right side and threw a nice pass to Nick Linta for 36 yards down to the 8. Three plays later, it was 4th and inches and Ryan burst through on the right side for the touchdown, then threw complete to Rice to make the score 14-7.

Madison took the next kick and moved right down to score before halftime with bruising runs by Matthew Walsh (#44) and speedy runs by O'Toole. The drive culminated with a 10 yard pass from Matthew Sullivan (#12) to Kyle Anderson (#66), but the kick that followed clanked off the right upright, making the score 20-7 at the half.

The third quarter began when Madison received a short kickoff and started just shy of midfield. A couple running plays by Walsh and O'Toole, and a short pass to Walsh got the ball into the Hornet's red zone and then O'Toole ran for his 3rd touchdown of the day. The kick was wide left, so the score was now 26-7.

Charlie Boyd took the kickoff and took it for a nice ride out over the 40. A couple of busting runs by Alex Borkowski, a QB keepr run by Ryan for a first down and nice run by Justin Blood were all highlights in a drive that seemingly stalled on the Tigers' 33 as it became 4th and 4. Curtis Sutherland took a pitch and made it around the right end, and then broke into the open, zig zagging through tacklers in the middle of the field and into the end zone for a Branford touchdown. The extra point try was no good, but the Hornets had renewed confidence and were now only down 26-13.

Madison took the next kick, and after a couple of running plays, connected on a 48 yard pass play from Sullivan to Alex Tuccero (#7) for a TD. The kick that followed was good, so Madison was up 34-13 after three.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers added a 6th TD when Tuccero broke a long run down the far sideline. The kick that followed was good, making the final score 42-13.

Thus ends the long 10 game season for these Senior Hornets with a record of 4-6. Respectable considering the strength of this year's schedule. For most of this team's Seniors, they played their final game in the program. Those that played for Coach May for 5 years, we racked up a 15-23-3 record in the regular season. We made the playoffs in 3 of those 5 seasons and had a 3-3 record. Congratulations boys! We hope to see you play next year in the High School...

Youth A and North Branford A Tie in the Rain

North Branford Youth A 6 0 0 6 - 12
Branford Youth A 0 6 6 0 - 12

10/21: Wyatt Miller ran for an 18 yard TD on fourth and 2 to tie this game in the second quarter. As the second half started, it began to rain steadily, but the young Hornets moved down and scored when Noah DeGoursey fought his way through heavy traffic to score a 17 yard TD. Noah took a half back pitch and threw to his brother
Zac for the conversion to put Branford up 13-6 through 3. Apparently, the extra point for Branford's second touchdown was somehow ruled incomplete, because North Branford came back to score a 4th quarter touchdown and this one ended in a 12-12 tie.  (255 Photos)
